Light Fall Layers

dress: vintage (similar)
trench: SheIn c/o
shoes: Target
glasses Karen Walker via DITTO c/o
watch: Fossil

bag; Amazon
bracelets: My Arm Charms c/o

Hello and welcome to Monday! Fall layers are my absolutely favorite thing. It's getting cool enough to wear jackets but still warm enough to sport bare legs. The neutrals are taking the spotlight this fall and I'm loving it. A simple crochet white dress with khaki trench coat is exactly what this weather is calling for.I love how the addition of black accessories takes it from simple to sophisticated. What do you think about white after labor day? Personally, I'm all about braking all fashion rules!

How To: Take Family Photos

When it comes to family photos, everyone wants to have them but no one wants to put the work into them. Recently we got our brood ready and ventured out for a photo shoot. Here is what I learned.

1. Wear Coordinating Clothes
Since photos are all about the aesthetics, make sure they look cohesive. It is not about one person therefore nothing should be standing out. Do not wear the same colors because you will blend in but have styles and colors that complement each other. Think about the background you are going to have and how you want the photos to look. Is it a formal shoot or do you want the photos to have a relaxed feeling? If you do not think it through, you will be wasting your time and money, and won't like the results.

2. Know What You Want
Look through Pinterest for ideas, research poses and settings, because not all photographers are alike. The photographer should be prepared and know about family set up but they may have different things in mind. Unfortunately, not all photographers know how to put families together in a creative way and you will be disappointed when you receive the photos. Find the type of photographer who will be able to carry out the service the way you like so ask how they do their photo shoots. Gather reviews from other people who have been photographed and ask for sample work.

3. Make Your Expectations Known
Before you agree/sign a contract, make sure you tell the photographer what you want. If you want more family, artistic photos or individual portraits. You will be disappointed that there are not enough group photos if that's what you were looking for. Also, tell them how much editing you want to be done (ex:.high contrast or soft neutrals) and what you want edited out. Photographers should edit obvious things (feet in the background) and do most of the work without saying. As a customer you should be relaxed and it is the job of a photographer to tell you if you hair is in the way, or hands are in the wrong position, or your smile looks too strained. Lastly, ask about their customer satisfaction policy.

4. Pay After Seeing the Final Product
As a customer who's paying for a service, you have the right to inspect the final product before paying. If you are not satisfied with the photos, make your concerns known. If you are disappointed be ready to justify why (ex. the quality of photos is bad, things are not edited out). Customer service should be part of the business and your satisfaction is what every photographer has to be to looking for. Whatever the reason, if you don't like the end result, it's your right as a customer to voice it.

5. Be Prepared (for anything)
Although you should expect the photographer to be prepared (ex. a blanket for children to sit on), think things through. Bring extra change of clothes, especially for children and think about secondary location (or talk about a re-do) in case it rains. Also, if you end up not liking the photos be prepared to dispute the fact and bargain for lower price. That may cause some problems between you and the photography service but don't hesitate to voice your concerns. After all, you are the one who's paying and therefore 100% in the right.

Modern 70's

watch: Fossil (loooove these)
bracelets: My Arm Charms c/o
pumps: Target (love these)

If you have been paying attention to the fashion world, you noticed that this fall it's all about the 70's. Although I'm not a huge fan of the era (so much fringe!), I can get behind 'everything denim' trend. Especially since I don't have to buy things like flares (they have been laying in my closet for almost nine years) and this denim skirt (from my high school days). And the fact that I fit into a skirt that I wore in high school has me all giddy. It also proves the fact that I wasn't the prom queen (ha!).
This outfit was inspired by this look but I'm not sure how close I got. Do you think I look half as cool as she does in her outfit posts?

P.S Don't forget today is the last day to enter the giveaway for two bracelets of your choice!

Body Image {Motherhood Challenges Series}

Becoming a mother is an earth shattering experience. If you haven't been through it, there really is no way to explain it. Honestly. Besides having the precious little bundle of joy and the excitement of being a mother, there are a lot of things a woman goes through.

After growing this gorgeous belly and having everyone admire your body's ability to house a human, all of a sudden you are empty. You have nothing but flab skin and stretch marks, your hair is falling out and your breasts are leaking milk. What has happened, you may ask yourself? Where am I in all this? Who's this tired and frazzled woman starring at me in the mirror?

All those things are normal and part of the deal.

After having my first baby, I was super upset and almost hated the way my body looked. I gained too much weight and on top of that, had a C-section which made healing that much more painful physically and emotionally. There were stretch marks and lots of silent tears in the shower. I did not appreciate what my body has done and wanted my old self back. Desperately.

It took time and lots of patience to feel like myself again.

This time around, I took care of myself and was kind to my body all throughout my pregnancy. I ate healthy, exercised and didn't gain above what I should. But I still have loose skin and a flabby belly which will take time to disappear. And even though I look better, it's my attitude and thoughts that changed.

I appreciate my body's ability to grow a human being.  I marvel at the fact that I was able to give birth naturally and the incredible feeling that it gave me.

I love my curves and that soft belly that once held my precious little girl. I enjoy the fact that my ankles are back and don't look like elephant feet anymore (ha!). I love being able to breastfeed my child and laugh every time I get a let down.

I know that it takes time to lose the baby weight but I'm not in a hurry. I'm enjoying this season of life because I know it goes by way too fast.

Honestly, having a positive body image is not about size or number on the scale, it's about feeling comfortable in your own skin. I'm happy with the way my body looks right now and what it has accomplished. I know I'm not perfect, and never want to be. Those curves remind me that this body brought two amazing individuals into the world and that's something to be celebrated (with a giant piece of cake;-).

The Last of Summer

top: INC
skirt: Forever21 (similsr here and here on sale)
heels: old (similar)
bag: Kate Spade
glasses: Choies c/o
watch: Fossil

It's officially fall over here. The mornings are so chilly that I'm itching to turn the heat on. Yet, I couldn't wait to wear this top (which I go on super sale) until next year. I know that it's not online or in stores anymore but I just love it. The stripes and the flowers are so perfect together I think. Plus, can you tell I'm in love with this midi skirt? Although, I'm quite not sure about the 70s trend for this fall. I can get on board with denim but suede isn't quite my thing (yet). Are you a fan of all the fringe, suede and lots of denim?

What Would You Like To See More?

Happy Sunday! If you've been following me for a while, you know I've done all kinds of posts. Everything from recipes to marriage advice has been on this blog. Although, having variety is a good idea, I would like to narrow down what I'm going to post and focus on that from now on. Changing my blog's direction and having a goal in mind is something I'm working on right now.
Would you help a girl out? It seems that all kinds of different posts get interaction from a lot of people. In an effort to narrow down what this blog is about, give ideas about your favorite posts. Or is it something totally different that I haven't explored but you would like to see.

Rustic French Apple Tart {Recipe}

Whenever I ate apple tarts at bakeries, they were delicious but looked too intimidating to make. Then one time, I was all out of pie crust and had basic ingredients on hand. That one time was my lucky time because from now on I don't want to buy another crust dough, The dough is light and flaky while the apples are sweet and yummy. This apple tart is a true French perfection.
Adopted from Alexandra's Kitchen

Ingredietns

Tart Shell

1 1/4 cups flour, plus more for dusting
2 tablespoon sugar (optional — this is my addition. I love a little sugar in a tart shell.)
8 tbsp. unsalted butter, cubed and chilled, divided
1/4 tsp. table salt

Apple Filling

7 apples* peeled and cored
2 tbsp granulated sugar
2 tbsp light brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup corn starch
1 tsp lemons juice
1/2 cup apricot jam, (optional)
*I used Gala apples, and I needed about 6 for my 9-inch tart pan.

Process

1. Combine flour, sugar, 8 tbsp. butter, and salt and work together with your hands to incorporate butter into flour. Drizzle in 3 tbsp. ice cold water and work it until dough is moistened. Clump it together to make sure it's not falling apart. Transfer the dough to a work surface and form into a flat disk; wrap in a plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. Peel, core and slice the apples.
(Note: This can be made up to three days in advance, You can follow this tutorial for a real fancy lay out of the apples. I do not have that much time on my hands so I just dumped the cut apples into the tart. Shall we say it's a rustic apple tart.)
2. Unwrap dough and transfer to a lightly floured work surface. Using a rolling pin, flatten dough into a 13″ circle and then transfer to a tart pan with a removable bottom; trim edges; chill for 15 minutes..
(Note: It may be easier to remove the bottom of the tart pan and roll the dough directly on it. It was a little tricky getting the dough into the pan after it was rolled out)
3. Heat oven to 350ยบ. Combine apples, sugars, corn starch, cinnamon and lemons juice in a bowl and toss it together to coat. Fill the tart with apple mixture and spread it out evenly. Bake for 45 minutes.
4. If you’re doing the apricot glaze: heat apricot jam in a small saucepan until warmed and loose; pour through a fine strainer into a small bowl and set aside. Transfer tart to a wire rack; using a pastry brush, brush top of tart with jam. Let cool completely before slicing and serving.

How To: Look Slim After Having a Baby

I've been getting a lot of comments (and emails) about my postpartum shape. I've done my fare share to not gain too much while I was pregnant but knowing how to dress your body to accentuate your strong parts, is also helpful. As well as owning a good pair of spanx (ha!). Here are my tips and tricks to looking fabulous after pregnancy.

1. Tuck It In. First and foremost, you must (absolutely HAVE TO) invest in a good pair of shape wear and undergarments. You can look great, and have expensive clothes but if your bra doesn't fit right, especially when nursing, it's a lost cause. Wearing supportive undergarments that help shape your body (and hide that tummy) is the oldest trick in the book. Although, for some reason, not everyone knows it. I'm letting the cat out of the bag - this amazing invention is your best friend. If you don't like the idea of being tucked in so much, getting a pair of regular spanx will help (a lot).

2. Shift Dress Galore. Before I knew what postpartum body was, I hated shift dresses. To me they felt so unshapely and very blah. I had a great figure and wasn't about to let a shapeless dress to hide it. Now, it's a totally different story. Shift dresses look feminine yet they hide the unwanted tummy (also see maxi dresses). So get yourself a few of those ASAP (see top photos)

3. Flaunt What You've Got. Every woman has at least one great feature. If you have gorgeous legs, then wear short skirt. If you didn't gain any weight in your butt, accentuate your figure with great pair of jeans. I have a slim waist and therefore right now I'm playing around that. Notice how the second row of photos are all fit and flare. The fit part accentuates the skinniest part of me, while the flare hides unwanted rolls. It's a win - win. Find your best feature and make it work for you.

 4. Avoid the Tent Look. The rule of thumb is that if the top is fit, then the bottom should be a little more loose and vice versa. Do not put on an overzised sweater on top of culottes  - you are running a risk of someone asking you how far along are you. Even though chunky knits with skinny jeans are great at hiding the belly, do not wear tops that have a high waist - they will make you look pregnant. Choose loose and straight shaped top with slimmer bottoms.

5. Own it. Your body went through so much. From growing another human being to expelling that little person out of your (even smaller) private area. It's a lot to process! Be kind to yourself, love your body and what it did. Don't get discouraged if the weight doesn't just fall off in a few weeks. It took you 9 months to gain all that weight, so give it at least half that to start going away. Own your stretch marks, leaking boobs and half pregnant tummy. This is a special time so cherish it and enjoy every moment!
