Holiday Perfection {Motherhood Challenges}

With the upcoming holidays, social media tends to draw pictures of perfection. More like tiny flawless snapshots in time for all to see. What we don't see is the hours (or even days) of preparations, stressful photoshoots, sleepless nights, marital quarrels and misbehaving children. We only see a small part of someone's perfectly staged photos (mine included) and think that this is reality. Absolutely not.
I, more than anyone, tend to get caught up in the presentation. I care more about how are we going to look while doing something instead of just enjoying the moment. For Jonathan's first Christmas I bought matching PJs for all of us and we took some photos Christmas morning but I don't remember anything else. I don't remember playing with Jonathan or what we did for breakfast and it makes me sad.
Every year I realize more and more how important my family is. I also see how fast time goes by and we are not promised another Christmas or holiday together. Life is too short and we spend so much of our time on meaningless things, doing pointless activities and wasting time. But to change habits and enjoy the season, you have to be intentional about it.
Don't just say you will enjoy it this year because once the holiday craziness kicks in, you will be swept along. Make a list and check it twice, and I don't mean which presents to buy. Make a list of things that will prevent you from enjoying it and being there, remove distractions and include more time with people.
It's hard not to filter life through social media when it seems that everyone has something better. But really, years from now, what will you remember - your newsfeed or precious memories made together?
Jesus wasn't born into this world so we could find the perfect gift for each other or so that we would have the best Christmas card in town. He was born to show his LOVE to the world. So instead of striving for perfection this holiday season, show your family and friends how much you love them. Be kind, be patient, forgive their mistakes, don't hold grudges, don't bicker about stupid things and savoir the time with family.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,  making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
Merry Christmas!
Happy New Year!

  1. Very true, life can get in the way sometimes and it can be very chaotic on Christmas day. Better just to stop and enjoy your family time together.

  3. A very well-written post! :)

    I wrote something similar about this recently, after reading the #struggles book by Craig Groeschel. On of the quotes I really like from it is 'Life is not about how many likes you get, it's all about the love you show'.

  4. I find that I can forget to be present when we're out doing something and I'm busy trying to get the perfect photo for a blog post. I want to document the things that we do, sure, but the memory won't be as good if it's just a memory of taking photos and not actually participating. Great post!
