Serving Tray (DIY)

So here is a long promised DIY project, well, more like a make over. I was doing a Baby Shower for my girlfriend and needed a serving tray for decorations. Instead of buying one, I decided to Do It Myself because I would make it exactly the way I wanted it.

You Will Need:

  1. Serving tray
  2. Spray Paint (color of your choice)
  3. Gloves
  4. Newspaper/old magazines
  5. Card stock (the harder, the better)
  6. Super Glue

I went to a thrift store and bought an old serving tray in ugly red and yellow, layered my J.Crew catalog underneath the tray to protect the porch from over spray, threw on a pair of gloves and got to work.

The trick with spray paint is you have to be patient and use multiple coats, otherwise you will end up with runs. First coat was just a white primer. But I didn't want it to be white, so I had off-white color spray paint (donated to me by my father-in-law) which I used.

After I thoroughly covered the tray with first coat, I let it dry for about 30 minutes. Then I did two more coats of beige (off-white) with couple of hours of drying time in between.
I bought card stock at Hobby Lobby that would nicely match the beige and serve me well after the party is over. I picked out a nice vintage pattern and cut it to the size of the tray. Next, to make sure that the paper will be secured and the surface would remain smooth, I glued it on with super glue (make sure to keep your gloves on and don't use glue gun).

TA-DA!!!

Note for Self: Make sure you are paying attention to the gluing part and not talking to your mother while doing it. See how the pattern went from horizontal to vertical? Yeah, not good... and super glue isn't nice when it's being ripped off.

Here it is being used at the Baby Shower

Another way to style it! There are so many ways to use it that I'm already excited by how nice it came out.
(I DIY the flower pot below with spray paint too)

I hope you liked this! Enjoy!

DIY Spring Wreath

So spring has sprung and everyone is pulling out their rakes, mowing loans and putting up new spring wreaths. I found a great idea somewhere on PINTEREST and decided to give it a try. It's really a different kind of wreath - one made from yarn. I did not take pictures of the step by step process, still going to do my best to tell you how easy it is to make it. You can find the tutorial on making felt flowers here, I made Felt Blooms Version Two. I got the idea here so you can experiment and maybe try something different with yarn colors and patterns.

You Will Need:
1. Felt
2. Yarn
3. Glue Gun
4. Round Wreath Base
5. Small Poms
6. Scissors

STEP1
Wrap the yarn around the wreath using a little glue when needed to hold the yarn in place. Let the wreath rest to make sure there is no loose yarn.
STEP2
Make the felt flowers
STEP3
Put the flower in place and secure them with glue gun. (You may want to play around with flowers and see where it will look better. Don't glue them on the first try)
STEP4
Put few poms to add color and texture to the wreath
STEP5
TADA! You have your spring wreath ready to be hang on the door.

P.S. I enjoy mine every time I walk through the front door. r

Happy Love Day!

I really wanted my real post to be about something profound, deep and meaningful but in the spirit of Valentine's Day (yes, I agree, it is advertised way too much and used by retailers to suck money out of us) I still want to be be lovely-dovey and put a heart up here. So I found some red furry thing in my closet and bought a heart shaped wreath so I could put a sweet something on our bedroom door. I am personally not a fan of commercialized holidays, with "supposed to buy gifts" idea,  but it's still nice to receive a bouquet of flowers and maybe some chocolates, or chocolate covered strawberries (even better) any day of the year. As most women would agree, we love to be thought of and appreciated but if it only happens once a year on Valentine's Day, it's not that special and knowing that you receiving the same bouquet of flowers as other 10 million women on the same day, doesn't make me feel very appreciated. I love the gifts and thoughts that come out of no where and surprise me, like a sticky note on the bathroom mirror, or a note in the fridge on my lunch box. I am married and have to say that my husband is good at those little things. He will cover me up with a blanket when he sees me on the couch getting cold, or brings me tea when my cup runs empty, cleans my car off snow and makes sure I have something to eat. I don't think the idea of love and romance should start and end on February 14th but it should be in the air all year long, it's a wonderful way to share you love with someone else.
So here is a quick and super easy DIY idea for those of you who want the lovey-dovey without the mushy-ness ;-)

Supplies:
1 Red Feather Garland
1 Heart-Shaped Wreath (white)
Ribbon
1 Thumb Tuck
Glue gun

Wrap the garland around the heart and hot glue the ends. Get a nice ribbon (you can't see it, but mine says "love cherish adore") and tie it around the heart making a small bow. Next take the thumb tuck and push it into the upper ridge of the door so that ribbons will holds the heart. Done!!!
